Total Drama Island, the first season of the Total Drama series, made its debut 10 years ago today. This toon reality show parody was quick to set the mood for the humor and drama that unfolded throughout its succeeding seasons.
In honor of their decade celebration, here are my personal favorite moments from the season that get me laughing every time.
1. Duncan’s Fear of Celine Dion Standees, from the episode “Phobia Factor”
In the seventh episode of TDI, the campers must face their worst fears in order to advance to the next stage of the competition. There were a lot of unique fears among the campers, but nothing was as hilariously specific as Duncan’s Celine Dion standee phobia. His act of hugging the standee while a mock “Titanic theme” plays in the background always gets me laughing.
2. Lindsay Cursing out Heather, from episode “That’s Off the Chain!”
Being Heather’s ally proves to be its own challenge for poor Lindsay. When her luck runs out in the build-your-own-bike race, Heather’s lack of sympathy pushes Lindsay over the edge. Complete with censorship and priceless reactions from the other campers, Lindsay’s cuss-out moment deserves its own reality show award.
3. Heather’s Infamous Nip Slip, from the episode “X-Treme Torture”
Heather may be the queen of mean, but even she’s not immune to karma’s wrath. While attempting to cut Harold loose during the mud skiing challenge, a tree branch lets her girls make their censored debut. Boo-yah!
4. Harold’s Mad Beatboxing Skills, from the episode “Not Quite Famous”
Other than being the trademark nerd with a Napoleon Dynamite vernacular, Harold’s main trait in the show is bragging about his mad skills. However, he finally proves his skills exist by unveiling his beatboxing routine during the talent show. Not only is the surprise performance hilarious, it convinced TDI fans like myself to route for Harold in the competition.
5. Heather’s Justice Shave, from the episode “I Triple Dog Dare You!”
Karma continues to be Heather’s biggest rival in her final challenge of the season. Despite her refusal to take on Lindsay’s dare to have her head shaven, a clumsy slip leads Heather to having the worst hair day ever.
6. Justin Being Justin, occurring throughout the season
Though Justin isn’t the biggest talker in this season, his model body keep him the center of attention whenever he goes. Victims of this pretty boy’s attraction include all the female campers, Owen, and two Wawanakwa sharks. With looks hot enough to spawn his own theme music, Justin proves being beautiful has its perks.
7. Noah’s Team Spirit, from the episode “Dodgebrawl”
Some people just can’t get into team sports. Noah is no exception, preferring to catch up on his reading instead of assisting the Screaming Gophers in the team dodgeball game. At least he offers some
sarcastic cheers along the way.
8. Owen’s Castaway Crisis, from the episode “Camp Castaways”
When the final four are stranded in an uncharted area of Lake Wawanakwa, Owen gets a good old case of island madness. His comedic crisis includes taking an outhouse for shelter, befriending a coconut and growing a full beard within hours. Forget Tom Hanks; where’s Owen’s Oscar?
9. Eva’s MP3 Rage, from the episode “The Big Sleep”
Eva’s devotion to her MP3 player makes her willing to harm anyone or anything trying to take it from her. So when her beloved device goes “missing” during the sleeping challenge, the temperamental teen is quick to ransack her teammate’s belongings and cabin. Though her reaction to the crisis ultimately leads to her first elimination, it’s hard not to chuckle at the amount of brute strength Eva exerts all for the sake of her favorite songs.
10. Chef’s Dancing Boot Camp, from the episode “Basic Straining”
There’s no doubt that Chef Hatchet’s one tough cook. Though his recipe book may need updating, Chef proves to be a natural enforcer. So when he’s forced to host a challenge for the campers, it’s no surprise he creates an overnight obstacle course. The real surprise is Chef’s decision to have the campers warm-up for their boot camp with some lively choreography.
